Sand Key sprint or Long Leaf Olympic?

Post  mbbrad4d on Thu Aug 07, 2008 1:38 pm

Is anyone doing the Sand Key sprint triathlon Sept. 21 or the Long Leaf Olympic tri in New Port Richey Oct. 19?

Anyone done either of these before? Because I'm relatively new to this area, I don't know which races are good and which to avoid.

I'd be interested in the Sand Key Sprint, but don't know anything about it. I need a race for Sept.

I've been looking at the Longleaf race. I want to do an olympic before the end of the year and I like the fact that it's in October. Better chance that it's cooled off a little by then.

I was going to ask if anyone was doing the Downtown Orlando the weekend before vs. the Siesta Key. I think it would be great if we all could do an event together!!

I'm signed up for Cypress Gardens as my first triathlon in Oct. but I've been itching to go so maybe September will be my first...

In my experience, which is minimal, if you can get through the swim, you can get through the tri. As long as you go into it with the idea that all you want to do is finish. If you have higher aspirations than just finishing, then wait until you are fully ready. What I have found is there are always going to be things you can work on, or be in better shape. Find a tri that would be cool, in your opinion, and sign up for it. Use it as a learning experience and have fun. That will give you a goal to work towards and a date to be ready. If you want to wait until Oct, that's cool, but it is toward the end of the tri season and you'll have to wait until spring to feed the new addiction.

I looked at that one, too. I'm actually looking for a tri that has a cool post-race party. Who knows, I might do that one in Orlando.

I'll follow the herd. I think it would be great if we could plan on all doing the same event! So:

9/13(Sat.) Downtown Orlando Tri (This has a separate finish from the start. Kind of a bummer right? Is this normal?)
or
9/14(Sun.) Escape to Siesta in Sarasota
or
9/21(Sun.) Sand Key in Clearwater

The olympic distance is for another year for me so if you guys do that I'll have to beg off. I'm signed up for the 10/11 Cypress Gardens event and it's my first. So, the above options would become my first. Think the 9/21 is too close in time to the 10/11 for me??

I think you could do any of the sprints above and still do Cypress Gardens. Have you watched a tri before? If not, then watch either of the ones mid-September then do the Clearwater one.

The point to point Orlando Tri isn't horrible. I did the inaugural race and just made sure we had one car at the finish and they drove me to my car. If I remember correctly, it had a really good post race.

I'm already registered for the Sand Key tri. It looks pretty cool. Now, if I can just quit falling off my bike with these new pedals, all will be good.

Okay, I've checked my schedule and it looks like I will actually be over there the night before, so the hubby and I will get a place and stay over and do Sand Key on Sun a.m. - Yay!

Looks like I am out of Sand Key, I missed the early registration and don't feel like paying $85. Anyone doing any other sprints this month, that may still be open and not that much money?

Hi everyone. I'm new here and to triathlon. I tried to register for Sand Key but was too late. I have signed up for Cypress Gardens for my first and the Boca Bop down at Boca Grande for my second. I'd like to do an Olympic but my longest run so far is 10k and I don't want to push it too far. We'll see how Cypress Gardens goes.

Barring any injuries, my last tri of the year will probably be Long Leaf in New Port Richey. It's an Olympic, but it's the weekend after Cypress Gardens, so it might not be good to do that one if you're a newbie.

I meant to talk to those going to Sand Key this weekend at tonight's meeting, but if anyone could tell, I was EXHAUSTED.

I'll be picking up my packet in Clearwater Saturday because I'll be watching the Alabama game in St. Pete, but hopefully I'll see some...if not all of you early Sunday.

I'll be wearing a bright pink Zoot trikini, so if you see me...

I'll also look out for you, Dr. Donna!

I want to race!!! Just want to wish all that are racing, good luck. Hopefully I will have the time in the next three weeks to train for Cypress Gardens. Well, back to my homework.

New to triathlon, but not to swimming and biking. Complete newbie to running and that is my main holdup. I'll have to see how a 5k race feels after the swim and bike. If it feels OK, I would think the sprint would be a good primer for the olympic. Any thoughts.
